Fire Station 86 Opens Its Doors in Toluca Lake
T23-Community News LaBonge 1 firestation86tolucalakeSaturday was Fire Service Day in the City of Los Angeles, and Fire Station 86 in Toluca Lake opened its doors extra wide to serve members of the community with an “old-fashioned” pancake breakfast. The ninth annual event, sponsored by the Toluca Lake Chamber of Commerce, Councilmember Tom LaBonge, the Toluca Lake Homeowners Association, and the Greater Toluca Lake Neighborhood Council, was a community affair, with children’s activities, live music, and plenty of food to go around. All proceeds from the event went to benefit Fire Station 86 and the Widows, Orphans and Disabled Firemen’s Fund.

Sherman Oaks Discusses Transportation at Forum
T23-Community News LaBonge 2 sonctransportationforumOn the evening of Monday, May 13, the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council, in conjunction with Councilmember Tom LaBonge, hosted an interactive forum on issues of traffic and transportation in the Sherman Oaks area. Representatives from the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Metro, and Caltrans, together with more than 60 community members, come to the table to discuss the transit problems the neighborhood faces and their potential solutions. Ron Ziff, the Land Use Chair of the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council, moderated the forum and noted that the turnout was unprecedented.

The group gathered together this week for Room for the River: Los Angeles, a conference designed to explore the future of the Los Angeles River in the context of climate change and the Dutch experience. The Netherlands has, for 800 years, managed water in an urban coastal zone, and hopes to impart some its knowledge to the City of Los Angeles.

Toluca Lake Players Holds Auditions for Summer Show
The Toluca Lake Players, performing in Taber Hall at the Toluca Lake Methodist Church, will hold auditions for their summer show Crazy Love. The show is written by Dean Scott Schulman and parodies famous songs that talk about all kinds of “love.”

Needed are singers and actors who can carry a tune (ages 20—70).

Please sing a song to your own accompaniment, tape or CD, as piano unavailable. Tape/CD player will be provided.

The show performs weekends of July 12-14, 19-21, 26- 28th.

Los Angeles Master Chorale Concludes Season with Program of American Songs and Spirituals
A celebration of American choral and roots music – classic and new – wraps the Los Angeles Master Chorale’s 49th season with the world premiere of Plath Songs, set to the poetry of Sylvia Plath by Swan Family Composer in Residence Shawn Kirchner, as well as works by Samuel Barber, Charles Ives, Elliott Carter, Abbie Betinis, Eric Whitacre, and celebrated spiritual composer/ arrangers William Dawson, Jester Hairston, André Thomas, and Moses Hogan. Veterans Memorial Wall to Be Unveiled at Scholl Canyon Estates
Scholl Canyon Estates, an independent living community for seniors, will mark this Memorial Day with the establishment of an exclusive “Wall of Honor” to salute its dozens of war veteran residents.

The unveiling of the wall features “now and then” photos of Scholl Canyon residents. The free event is open to the public, and tours of Scholl Canyon will be made available.
