Party of the Century

The City of Burbank celebrates its 100th year in 2011 and marks the occasion with a host of free festivities citywide, including the highly anticipated “Party of the Century” in Downtown Burbank on July 8. A free community celebration, it is planned as a massive, one-day street festival with top entertainment, fireworks and more.

The Byrd Show

The Brand Library Art Galleries is proud to present The Byrd Show: 40 Years of Art & Design, the first West Coast retrospective of renowned artist and graphic designer David Edward Byrd’s career. The exhibit will run from June 11—July 22.

With a career spanning more than four decades, David’s work is firmly entrenched as part of our visual culture. The selection of the rock ‘n roll and musical theater greats that David Byrd has worked with over the years is a veritable who’s who, including The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Poetry Contest

A $1,000 grand prize is being offered in a contest sponsored by the Christian Poets Guild. The contest is free to enter and open to poets of any age. Fifty prizes totaling more than $5,000 will be awarded.

Poems of 21 lines or fewer on any subject and in any style will be judged by guild contest director Dr. Jeremy Carnegie. “We love encouraging poets,” he says. “We trust this contest will produce exciting results.”

Entries must be received by June 30 and may be submitted by mail or e-mail.

STUDIO CITY

Time for Teens

Teens and pre-teens are invited to attend a series of free Summer Programs featuring movies, speakers, performers, book discussions and good snacks.

These events are part of the library’s celebration of “Teen Summer Reading,” which is based around the theme “You are Here.” Teens are invited to read, participate in activities and share a spirit of adventure with others their age.

The first program at the Studio City Branch is Wednesday, June 15. The film, Eat, Pray, Love will be shown starting at 3 p.m. Italian-type snacks will follow. Even if you cannot arrive on time, this is a fun thing to do with your friends. Meet them at the library, enjoy the experience and sign up for Teen Summer Reading.

Summer Concert Series

Rocky Dawuni and the Afro Funke Soundsystem will kick off Levitt Pavilion Pasadena’s 50 Summer Concert Series on June 18 from 6-9 p.m.

The Levitt Pavilion Pasadena, located in Memorial Park in old Pasadena, will kick-off its ninth annual 50 Summer Concert Series (Wednesdays–Sundays) at Make Music Pasadena on June 18 from 6–9 p.m. Rocky Dawuni and the Afro Funke Soundsystem will kick off their 2011 Summer Season. All concerts have open lawn seating and are free and open to the public. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights concerts begin at 8 p.m. and Sunday concerts begin at 7 p.m. Children’s nights are Wednesdays at 7 p.m. There will be no performances July 4. Audience members can enjoy an evening under the stars with music, friends and family.
