Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Tom joined Mayor Villaraigosa on Monday in launching “We Serve LA,” an initiative aimed at empowering volunteers of every age to improve their neighborhoods, get involved in the city and strengthen communities.

“Become one of our great L.A. volunteers today,” Tom said to a crowd of volunteers gathered for the launch at George Washington Carver Middle School in South Los Angeles.

Pretty Park

Tom, members of the community, officials from the Department of Recreation and Parks and the Department of Water and Power gathered at Robert Burns Park on Thursday, Sept. 23. The pocket park in the Windsor Square area has undergone improvements funded largely by State Quimby funds.

“Parks are the centerpiece of a neighborhood,” Tom said. “It’s so important to have a place for the community’s members to connect, for their kids to play together and for neighbors to relax together. It’s all about celebrating nature and these improvements will encourage more visitors to enjoy and love Los Angeles.”

Rummage Sale

The annual St. Charles Rummage Sale, also known as the “White Elephant,” will be held Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Social Center, 10830 Moorpark St. (Lankershim/Moorpark)/ All proceeds benefit St. Charles Elementary School. A Dragon Near You

Come see the new 22 Komodos that hatched at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, at the junction of the Ventura (134) and Golden State (5) freeways. Native to only a few islands in Indonesia, this dragon has the smallest range of any of the world’s large carnivores.

Walk of Fame

The City of Burbank in collaboration with the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Board and the Burbank Athletic Federation are proud to announce this year’s induction of individuals into the Burbank Athletics Walk of Fame. The induction ceremony will honor all the outstanding contributions and achievements that these honorees have made in the field of athletics in their roles as participants, volunteers of professional staff to further the excellence of the organized sports programs sponsored by the City of Burbank Park, Recreation and Community Services Department. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. on October 2 at the George Izay Park/Olive Recreation Center at the Burbank Athletics Walk of Fame, located adjacent to the Bill Burton Field/Diamond #2.
