CART Presents Norman Corwin’s Comedies for 100th Birthday Tribute, with Murder in Studio One and Mary and The Fairy, May 29th

In tribute to Norman Corwin’s 100th birthday, the California Artists Radio Theatre (CART) is presenting a “once in a centennial lifetime” performance of two great Corwin radio plays with the Emmy and Peabody Award winning playwright-author attending. Yes, Norman Corwin will be on hand at the Beverly Garland Hotel’s Little Theatre on Saturday, May 29 at 7 p.m.

To make it a joyous occasion, CART’s creative director Peggy Webber has selected the Corwin comedies Murder in Studio One and Mary and The Fairy. The impressive list of stars performing in the shows include Samantha Eggar, JoAnne Worley, Marvin Kaplan, Monte Markham, Shelley Long, Phil Proctor, Paul Keith, Tom Williams, Richard Herd, and John Harlan.

It is a treat for Samantha Eggar to perform the delightful Murder in Studio One. She said one of her great joys was being directed by him about a dozen years ago. “I must admit, it was a sensual experience,” she reports. “He directs like a conductor. This handsome tall slim man stands and extends his long arms to gesture to you as if you were a first violinist. It’s powerful for the actors on stage for a radio play, as he orchestrates the performance and gets the best from you.” And Corwin’s words are amazing, she praises, which is why he has been called “the poet laureate of radio.”

At the helm on May 29 will be Peggy Webber, whom Eggar calls “a standard bearer in the world of radio.” Founder of CART, Webber carries on the great tradition of radio dramas and comedies with a rich literary heritage.

Corwin, who continues writing for radio, was a cornerstone for the “Golden Age” of radio dramas in the 1930s and ’40s. The renowned writer, producer, and essayist is also active at the USC Annenberg’s School For Communication & Journalism.

All seats for CART’s Corwin tribute are $10, at the Beverly Garland Hotel’s Little Theatre, 4222 North Vineland (south of Moorpark), North Hollywood. For Reservations call 213-683-3422, or go to www.cartaudio.org and order through PayPal.
