The Palate first encountered Jack and Jeff Williams about four decades ago, when the father and son team launched their first food venture: a super-casual store front café on North Brand Boulevard. The place did well enough at lunch, but in those days you could fire a canon down the empty street in the evening. Nobody thought of dining after business hours on Brand.

Undaunted, the enterprising Williams pair introduced Glendale to its first full-out fish and seafood place. Clancy’s Crab Broiler clicked on the corner at 219 N. Central Ave., where it remains popular and family operated today. Ah, fresh fish and the sweet smell of success.

The well maintained and picturesque period seaport setting puts patrons in the mood for platters piled with their favorite catch of the day at lunch or dinner, seven days a week.

Daily specials include all you can eat choices Monday thru Wednesday, $14.75. There are Pan Fried Dungeness Crab Cakes, $24.95; and a surf n’ turf platter of Fried Shrimp n’ Baby Back Ribs, $22.95. The Palate approves of the Breaded Sand Dabs and Herb Crusted Salmon, $18.95; as well as Pan Fried Cornmeal Crusted Scallops, $19.95. Start any meal with the full flavor Clam Chowder, $2.95.

There are three inviting seating areas and a full selection of wines and cocktails from the Blue Whale Sports Bar — worth a visit with its plethora of 14 flat screen TV events. There’s ample parking behind Clancy’s.

National Pi Day is Monday, March 14, and every Morton’s The Steakhouse will offer slices of their signature Key Lime Pie for $3.14 instead of (ouch) $10.50. How sweet it is! The dessert deal will be served in main dining rooms or the bar area.
