Sideshow Media Group Presents Oh Haunted Night
Oh Haunted Night, presented by Sideshow Media Group, was an ultra-entertaining celebrity reading benefiting Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. It filled the hearts of a cozy Acme Theatre crowd with the holiday “spirits” … and monsters … and things that go bump in the night. Stars from movies, television, and stage gathered to read the clever Christmas stories that had little haunted twists to them. The very original fractured tales were from a collection by acclaimed comic writer Jim Krueger, the former creative director for Marvel Comics and recipient of the Will Eisner Award. Krueger and producer John Bucher co-created the event to help bring hope and joy to kids in need of both.
Krueger said, “There’s a long tradition of writers looking out for Children’s Hospital, and I wanted to do a benefit for them using my twisted stories. I believe the really scary stuff is what the kids have to go through when they get sick. They want to believe that things will get better, and I hope we’re helping to make that possible.” Krueger thanked Bucher for making the show possible. They both have had a vision to use story to have a positive impact in their community. And it was fitting that it has been realized in the midst of this magical season.
Bringing to life Krueger’s tales about Santa, gift monsters, vampires, elves, and more, was an impressive line up of performers. Ernie Hudson (of Ghostbusters fame) read the “Poison Cookies” story with gusto; Barry Bostwick read “The Frankincense Monster”; recently engaged Adam Shapiro and Katie Lowes did “Coal”; Angelo Restaino, “December Man”; Bill Parks, “Christmas Sucks”; Cerina Vincent, “Mary Had A Lamb”; and Eddie Jemison read the “Evil Elf.” Jeff Larson emceed Oh Haunted Night, introducing each star with film clips from their notable productions.
Benefiting L.A. Children’s Hospital’s Holidays from the Heart program, the event was a great success, and Krueger said he intends to make Oh Haunted Night an annual tradition.
