For music lovers, the Glendale Pops Orchestra debuts at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale with “The Premiere,” featuring a musical Pops journey that will cover Swing, Bossa Nova, love songs and some rock’n’roll with special guest Kenny Loggins. The performance will be led by artistic director and conductor Matt Catingub. Proceeds from the show on Friday, May 13, go to support Glendale Arts, a non-profit organization that manages the Alex Theatre, the Glendale Pops Orchestra, and coordinates resources for local artists and arts organizations. Keep up the great work, Pops!

Music man Charles Fox is the creator of many of the most recognizable theme songs in TV history — such as “The Love Boat,” “Love, American Style” and “The Wide World of Sports” themes, to name a few. Now after a lifetime of contributing to the music of our lives, Fox has had one of his most famous songs enshrined in the Smithsonian in Washington. The only existing copy of the “Happy Days” record, used in the opening scene of the long running hit TV series, has joined the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s renovated Entertainment Exhibit. At the dedication ceremony, Fox said, “The sense of pride that I am feeling, for myself and from my children is overwhelming.” The Emmy and Grammy winning, and Oscar nominated composer also has written a book “Killing Me Softly: My Life in Music.” It’s a delightful trip down a tune-filled memory lane.

Speaking of great music, congratulations to Corky Hale, the acclaimed jazz pianist, harpist and vocalist, who will be making her debut at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Her show “Corky Hale & Friends” will be May 21, part of the closing night of the three-day Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival. It’s all about women in harmony with their talent.

Congratulations are also in order for composers Mike Stoller and Artie Butler who have been nominated for a New York Drama Desk Award for Best Music for their new musical The People in the Picture, which just opened on Broadway.

If you can’t make it to Broadway for the Tony Awards on June 12, the Actors Fund will present its 15th annual Tony Awards Party at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles. Hosted by Marilu Henner, the special event will have a live feed of the Tony Awards, and there will be a ceremony honoring Broadway veteran Hal Holbrook. The celebrity committee for the official Tony Party includes Carol Burnett, Brian Stokes-Mitchell, Angela Lansbury, Jerry Herman, Ken Howard, Annie Potts and Holland Taylor. A star-studded theater-loving crowd is expected to be on hand.

For the Java-loving crowd, a special blend of coffee was created for the Nancy Davis Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis in support of the national “Orange You Happy to Erase MS” awareness campaign. It is Don Francisco’s Coffee limited-edition Blend to Erase MS, which was launched with the commitment of donating 20 percent of gross sales through the end of May. Don Francisco was the sponsor of this year’s Rock & Royalty themed MS Gala. Nancy Davis said, “We are very grateful for Don Francisco’s Coffee and their continued generosity.”
