“A Roof over Their Heads”
There is so much confusion in solving the multitude of problems facing our communities today regarding schooling, housing, education, and more that three of our Los Angeles mayoral candidates, Councilman Eric Garcetti, Councilwoman Jan Perry, and City Controller Wendy Greuel were invited to share their views and ideas on one subject: the housing crisis in Los Angeles. This forum took place on Jan. 11 at the Cathedral Center in downtown Los Angeles.
The problems facing the city are that diminished sources of major funding are no longer available at a time when rental housing remains critical. The moderator, Dr. Raphael Bostic, a housing economist at USC, began with a slide show and stated his ideas regarding the crisis, and then introduced each candidate as they shared their comments. The candidates were briefed in advance regarding the questions being presented, and each answered in turn.
Eric Garcetti spoke his pledge to end homelessness rather than “manage” it. Jan Perry wanted to focus on getting affordable housing units built in various needy communities. Wendy Greuel has worked as a Federal Housing Administrator in the past, and she shared her experiences and views. After numerous discussions and ideas presented, each candidate summarized their positions on the housing crisis and the meeting was adjourned, leaving the audience of approximately 350 people, who gave up their Friday evening to attend the forum, inspired and thoughtful from the information they heard.
