Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant in Burbank/Toluca Lake is celebrating its 60th year by going solar! A wonderful celebration was held on Thursday, September 24 with a dedication ceremony and many renowned business and community leaders present. It began at 11am with the entertaining Bill Nye as the Master of Ceremonies, who introduced the panel of speakers including Philip MacDonald (owner of this Big Boy Restaurant since 1949—which is the oldest remaining one in the United States). He was followed by Gregory Ashley (President of Canadian Solar USA), Robert Liggett, Jr. (Chairman of Bob’s Big Boy International), Gary Bric (Mayor of the City of Burbank), Gary Olson (President/CEO of Burbank Chamber of Commerce), Dr. Lance Williams (Executive Director of U.S.

Green Building Council-Los Angeles), and Wayne Colmer (Board President of Habitat for Humanity of SF/SCV—the official charity of the Bob’s “Sixty and Solar” celebration).
All of the speakers were excited and full of praise for this project. Heliopower was the installer of the project for the solar system, and all noted that Bob’s Big Boy is setting a wonderful example for other businesses to follow.
In his informative speech, Mayor Gary Bric, of Burbank, told us that since 2001, Burbank Water and Power has been offering a rebate program to eligible residents and businesses who install solar systems, and to date over fifty systems are now generating enough power to service 8,000 homes for a month! Nationally, Burbank was recognized as ranking among the top cities using solar power.
Over the years, Bob’s has seen many celebrities stop by for burgers, as well as the crowds attending the Friday Night Classic Car Shows held each week. The dedication ceremony was followed by a delicious lunch for all involved with Big Boy burgers, fries and shakes, and later in the evening, a Sock Hop Celebration took place with the music of Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries. What a great day for everyone there!
