Born and Raised in NYC, Pop Artist Sofia J Has Finally Made the Move to L.A.
“I’m not sure what took me so long,” she says. “I’ve wanted to live in sunny California my whole life.” Maybe it’s still the honeymoon phase, she hasn’t met the jaded Hollywood crowd yet, or the lack of sunshine from past winters has her in a euphoric sun-induced stupor, but whatever the case, she is a believer. “I absolutely love it here and the thing that shocks me most is how many East Coast people live here: NY, Boston, Philadelphia — we’re everywhere. It seems like every other person has some kind of East Coast connection.”
Sofia (known as Sofia J to her fans) has a successful music career and teaches voice at two studios: one in Burbank and one in West Hollywood. If you watch much TV, chances are you’ve heard her voice. From Fox’s New Girl to ABC’s The Secret Life and multiple theme songs chosen for MTV shows, she also toured the nation in Contemporary Christian Music, has held a major record deal, and has an international Gold Record. Lately she splits time between writing and recording new music, spending time with her kids and husband (a music & TV producer), and teaching voice.
“While it was sad to say goodbye to the many students I taught back east, I’m excited to be working with very talented new students here,” she says. Her zest and love of life is contagious, and it’s easy to see why her students rave about her (several students cite their experiences with Sofia J as “life-changing,” a claim that sounds incredulous until you spend time with her). She offers the best of both worlds, as a classically trained vocalist yet still a working pop singer who has success in the music business. It’s always helpful to be around others in the industry, she points out, as she currently shares office space with Dave Stroud, one of the foremost vocal coaches in L.A. (Natasha Bedingfield, Adam Lambert, Justin Timberlake).
“At the end of the day, I love people,” she continues, “and I love helping my students by sharing not only my musical experience and knowledge — but a little piece of me.”
