Burbank Spa & Garden
By David Martel
When it comes to day spas, the expression “only the strong survive” holds true. Since 2008 there has been a significant decline in the number of them operating in the U.S. Come to the Burbank Spa & Garden and you will see why it’s here to stay.
Customers walking up to either of the spa’s buildings get the calming sense of an isolated retreat as they pass through the garden lounge. Managing owner Jouni Passi, a third generation Finnish massage therapist, leads an experienced staff of twenty-five working at the facility. Services provided include massage, waxing, manicures, pedicures, facials, and reflexology. The beautiful complex has 15 private massage rooms, including two couples’ suites. Each has heated tables as well as heat lamps, which aid in muscle relaxation. Saunas imported from Finland reach 180 degrees and have the added element of eucalyptus steam on demand via pull cord.
Passi explains that while the customer base ratio of the average American day spa is 80 percent female and 20 percent male, Burbank Spa & Garden’s is approximately 50/50. He attributes this to their neglect of the color pink. Instead, calming earth tones and European décor make up the spa’s interior. The retreat has been around since 1964; Passi adds that some men go there because their fathers did.
While the spa is a full-service facility, part of the reason for its loyal clientele is an expertise in massage for pain management. Deep tissue work is highly popular, and specialties include hot stone massage (using warm, smooth Basalt stones), pregnancy massages (intended to provide benefits for both mother and child), and Shiatsu (an Eastern-based treatment focused on the release of blockage to restore balance).
The store at Burbank Spa & Garden is the only place in the Valley where you can find premiere Epicuren products (a line developed by dermatologists for a variety of skin types). They are now offering designer gift certificates as well as custom holiday packages. “Sweet Holiday Treat” consists of a 55-minute Swedish massage and sauna, manicure, pedicure, and European spa facial. Many other packages, including some designed with men in mind, are offered. Also available for a variety of special occasions is “Chocolate and Roses,” a couples massage unique to the spa.
During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we can all use a little respite. I am happy to have found a place perfect for just that!
