Calendar of exciting events happening in October

The Pound Puppies cartoon series.

October, 10, 2010 should be special. The date is 10-10-10. So what kind of excitement will mark the occasion?

A new network will debut, called The Hub, headquartered in Burbank. So move over ABC and NBC and make room for TV’s new kid-friendly destination. It’s a joint venture with the Discovery Channel and Hasbro, and at the helm is Margaret Loesch, president and ceo of The Hub. A veteran programmer who knows the youth market (she started the Fox Kids Network), Loesch is setting her sights on the 6 to 12 age range.

“A hub is a place where great things come together, and that’s what our channel is all about,” she told me. “It will be a fun destination that brings kids and families together.”

Among the shows that will kick off The Hub’s broadcasts are Transformers Prime and a game show version of Clue. An original series called Family Game Night also sounds like a winner. And there’s a cute cartoon, Pound Puppies, which features the voices of Eric McCormack and Betty White (that Golden Girl is everywhere these days!). My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, Fraggle Rock, Batman Beyond, G.I. Joe and Meerkat Manor will be among the other new and familiar characters popping up on the Hub’s schedule. Tune in on their “Sneak Peek” Sunday, Oct. 10 and enjoy it as a family.

October Events

Other noteworthy events in October that rate a perfect “10” include the 15th annual NBC Reunion Dinner, Saturday, Oct. 23. It is being held on the 85th anniversary of Johnny Carson’s birthday. Comedian Tom Dreesen, who appeared 61 times on The Tonight Show, has put together a special tribute to the late King of Late Night. Many stand-up comedians whose careers were boosted because of their appearances on Carson’s show will also be featured, among them: Kelly Monteith, Michael Preminger, and Steve Landesberg. Other comedians whose careers were launched by Tonight Show appearances are urged to contact Gene Walsh (at 818-843-4550) to join in the tribute.

The reunion will be emceed for the first time by NBC’s Days of Our Lives stars Joseph Mascolo and Lauren Koslow at the Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake. And it’s important to get the word out to the NBC alumni, because there’s nothing like an old fashion “class reunion” to jog loose some great memories and maybe inspire a few folks to sit down and write their memoirs. So tell a friend if they spent some time with the Peacock Network.

Always a howling good time is the 18th annual Camp Ronald McDonald For Good Times Halloween Carnival Presented by JAKKS Cares. It’s set for Sunday, Oct. 24 at the Universal Studios backlot. Lots of celebrities will be there for the carnival fundraising event. Also featured will be exciting performances on Clear Channel Radio’s MY-fm stage, wild rides, games, prizes, and fun for kids of all ages. The philanthropic JAKKS Cares helps the carnival raise money for Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, a place kids with cancer can go to have some fun and make friends that are going through the same experiences. It’s a place for the kids to regain their childhood, and so is the Halloween Carnival. Everyone is encourage to dress up because there’s a spooktacular costume contest. Call (310) 268-8488 for ticket information.

Jamie Lee Curtis, the classic “scream queen” from the original Halloween horror movie, strongly supports the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation. So Curtis is happy to host the CAAF’s 17th annual Dream Halloween event on Saturday, Oct. 30. Santa Monica’s Barker Hanger will be transformed into Halloweenland with a fabulous “Trick-or-Treat Lane,” ghosts and goblins, and musical entertainment. Joining Curtis will be Doris Roberts, the event’s vice chair, and co-chairs Bob Eckert (Mattel’s CEO) and Jerry Storch (Toys “R” Us CEO), who will help create the not-too-scary fantasyland for families.

Remember, life should be made up of wonderful memories, so make sure you create some with the people you love.
