Dancing with the Stars: Live in Las Vegas

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Not!

From l, Cheryl Burke and Kym Johnson at “Dancing with the Stars: Live in Las Vegas” open-ing.

When I’m in town, I’m usually on business and stay on the Strip. Not this time. I was a guest of long-time friends who are fairly new to town. My hosts: Gwen and Jim Bartholomew, their teens Tai, Helena, and Tatiana, as well as a black lab named Pumpkin.

How could I go to SinCityand not see Dancing with the Stars: Live in Las Vegas? While I was about to sit down in the Tropicana showroom, the sight of our seatmates caused me to scream. Two of my dearest friends, Michael Caprio and Randy Slovacek (The Randy Report), were sitting right next to us! I didn’t even know Michael was in town, as he had just accompanied his client, Olivia Newton-John, to the Indianapolis 500. All was very synchronistic and Michael wound up inviting us backstage to see his DWTS colleagues (more later).

Former DWTS contestant Carson Kressley hosted the show. If ever there was a person born to headline a Vegas showroom, it was Carson! His humor, enthusiasm, and change of outfits seduced the audience and he gave 110%. He was not even averse to flying in the air.

DWTS two-time trophy winner Kym Johnson was a featured dancer. What a treat! We wished she had more dance numbers.

Fresh off of its season 14 launch, Dancing with the Stars: Live in Las Vegas is a one-of-a-kind production directed by Amy Tinkham and choreographed by Aussie Jason Gilkison. It’s in the middle of its 2-week run with special footage from the show.

Some of its dancers include Kyle Massey, Sabrina Bryan, Tia Carrere, Dmitry Chaplin, and Lacey Schwimmer. The rest of the members of the Vegas troupe could automatically join the ABC show because they are that good.

More stunning in person, Lacey showed off her hosting skills for an audience dance contest. At one point, Joey took the mike and broughtCarsonback to script when the comedic reality star experimented with his own creativity.

Backstage in Carson’s dressing room (which featured a tall blue headdress which he wore onstage for a number), we caught up with everyone. Said the ever gracious Kym, “I’ve just been in Vegas for a week (after DWTS wrapped) to prep for this.” She’s off to New York and has more travels in coming weeks before the new season starts.  She took some time after the show two days before to join Cheryl Burke at Chippendales for a DWTS producer’s bridal party. “I loved the boys. It was great fun.” We last saw Kym at The Pantages’ West Side Story after party, as we reported right here.

A regular on GMA and Live with Kelly, Carson told me he is in talks to host/judge a reality show in the fall. The Emmy-award winner and author of three books went out of his way to run down the hall to bring his guests some bottled water.
