Fangs for the Memories at the Teen Choice Awards
The Teen Choice Awards 2010 had The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and The Twilight Saga: New Moon leading the pack with a combined total of 17 nominations. So it was no surprise that the popular vampire chronicles were the overwhelming winners at the FOX TV event a few nights ago at Universal’s Gibson Amphitheatre. They took home about a dozen awards, plus Eclipse was chosen the favorite summer movie.
More than 85 million fans cast their votes for the Teen Choice Awards, in support of their favorite celebrities, films, TV shows, music, sports and fashion. Fans also picked The Vampire Diaries as TV’s Breakout Show, and gave awards to its cast members with Breakout TV Star honors going to Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev, and Choice Villain to Ian Somerhalder. So it was a good night for fang-favorites.
Some other top choices with multiple wins among over a hundred awards given out were TV shows Glee, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and American Idol. Country music darling Taylor Swift, and the pop singer tween-heartthrob Justin Bieber weren’t on hand to pick up their surfboard trophies, but did pre-taped segments that delighted their fans.
Forever young Betty White was there, and danced and had a lot of fun with her Proposal co-star Sandra Bullock, who joked that White “hasn’t been a teen since 1919.” Bullock was awarded a couple of surfboards for The Blind Side, and gushed, “I’m so blessed and lucky, there were so many good lessons I took away from it. I got to meet so many good people.” One who is truly good and sweet is her Blind Side co-star Quinton Aaron, whose talent is as big as his 6-foot-8 frame. I got a big hug when I saw him on the red carpet and was delighted that his new found success has allowed him to get his own house.
The great guys from Glee, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Mark Salling and hunky Cory Monteith, got to host the Teen Choice Awards with sassy singer Katy Perry. She reinvented herself throughout the broadcast, becoming everything from a prom queen to a goth girl, but somehow she remained a hottie. Megan Fox and Taylor Lautner actually got Choice Hottie trophies. And look out for the hot rising star Lucas Cruikshank, who stars in Fred: The Movie, upcoming on Nickelodeon and based on one of the most popular Internet characters of all time.
American Idol cutie-pie David Archuleta, now 19, talked to me backstage about how new judges could give Idol a “facelift.” So I asked if he was interested in the job. Archuleta was amused at the idea and said, “To be honest, I think I’m too soft to be a judge. Maybe Elton John or Madonna or people like that. They are experienced, and people would really listen to what they would say.”
One of the funniest moments at the event was when a new Kardashian sister was introduced, with Kim, Kourtney and Khloe welcoming “Cougar Kardashian” on stage — it was comic George Lopez dressed in drag!
Another scene-stealing moment was when soccer great David Beckham was named the Choice Sports Star and brought his sons up on stage to help him accept. His youngest son started running around after a ball. Backstage Beckham told me that his greatest joy is being a dad, and that he and his wife Victoria (Posh Spice) enjoy watching Glee together.
Moroccanoil was the sponsor of the Backstage Creations Cele-brity Retreat for Teen Choice 2010, which was a fun place to hang out for the celebrities. The stars loved getting the Moroccanoil luxury hair care products. And among the other gift bag goodies were the latest in Adidas Mega footwear, Flirt! Cosmetics, Zoptopz crimped and curled caps, Hello Kitty by Sanrio, Palm Pixi Plus, Vivitar cameras, and Texas Instruments’ educational tools for the back-to-school crowd. The Xcite Fashion Collection featured special event gowns that were dazzling, and something to keep in mind for prom time— or the next Teen Choice Awards.
