“Flags, Rifles, Balloons, Doves and Glamour?”
By Jim Etter
Where does all this come together??? On Memorial Day week-end at Pierce Brothers “Valhalla” Memorial Park and Mortuary, located at 10621 Victory Blvd. in North Hollywood. Boy Scouts and American Legion Post 150 will host this event on Memorial Day weekend, beginning with the Glamour as Burbank Mayor Dr. Gordon and Vice-Mayor Frutos crown two young ladies (Miss Darby Walker and Miss Briana Deah) to reign over the weekend of events.
Both girls attend John Burroughs High School and have been selected to reign over the festivities. The first activity will be held on Friday Afternoon, May 23, commencing at 5 p.m. with the placing of hundreds of flags in the Veterans Memorial Section at Pierce Brothers Memorial Park.
The Friday event, which has opened the Memorial Day week-end for the past 16 years at Pierce Brothers, is a great way for the community to participate in paying tribute to our Veterans.
The two Queens will continue their reign over the coveted Holiday on Monday the 26th (commencing at 10 a.m.) as they step-off a parade of Classic Vehicles and, local dignitaries including TV Hostess Isabelle “Izzie” Merey of syndicated cable show Operation Drive-By who will be amongst some of the local notables in attendance.
A patriotic ceremony officiated by USMC-Retired Ralph Walker will be presented as we pay tribute to the holiday with a star-spangled grand opening featured appearance of Burbank Mayor, Dr. David Gordon and Vice-Mayor Bob Frutos. Festivities will follow to the sounds of the “Belle-Air Brass” all-ladies Brass Band and are FREE to the Community. The Car Show, Dove Release, Rifle Salute, and Balloons for the kids will culminate with a FREE BBQ Lunch for everyone in attendance.
By far, one of the most outstanding events to salute our Veterans on Memorial Day in the Los Angeles area. Come help judge the Classic Car Show and dress “Dapper” for the “Dapper Parade” and win one of many DVD/movies to be given away to the best Dapper Dressers of the day. The event will continue until 1:30 p.m.
