Home for the Holidays
Something just crashed in the kitchen, dishes I think.
“Where’s that check?” I hear my mother’s high pitched muffled voice shout from the kitchen.
None of us answer. We’re all cozy in the living room half asleep on the oversized cream, fluffy couch that’s so large my two sleepy sisters and I all fit comfortably with room to spare. I imagine heaven to be this warm and comfortable.
“Hey guys. Wake up! Have you seen my check?” Through my half-open eyes I see my thin mother standing determinedly in the entrance way to the living room with a Capri cigarette lit- half smoked- and she’s freaking. She taps her foot manically making a tap-tap sound from the tan paten-leather heels she wears.
“I just don’t understand where it could have gone. Could you understand where it would go?” She asks seriously while inhaling and some more tapping of the heel. Tap-tap, puff-puff.
My mother has been looking for this hundred dollar check she lost since she received it in her Christmas stocking on Christmas morning last week, and frankly my sisters and I can’t handle the search anymore. If my mom’s not looking for the check she’s talking about looking for the check. We’re over it and it shows.
“Oh forget it.” And she stomps out of the room angrily to find my father whose escaped to the deck to smoke a Fuente cigar.
Finally recovered from post- India sickness, I’m a new kind of exhausted.
Dr. Oz and The Doctors exhausted. Being so violently ill in and after India I’ve decided I’d like to take better care of my health. So I’ve come up with the very common New year’s resolution:
- Less stress
- Eat healthy
- Work out
But being healthy just seems so stressful.
I’m learning all kinds of valuable information, like how to check my tongue to see if my immune system‘s strong, how to locate and check my thyroid for cancer, and what kind of foods to pair together to get the most nutrients and improve overall health. But by the end of these shows I end up with long lists of pricey vitamins, expensive organic foods I need to buy and paraben-free products I should be using. I feel so overwhelmed with conflicting information from these shows, what I saw on Oprah, and my own research on the Internet that by the end of the day all I want to do is…none of it.
I’d like to be healthy but its like watching theses shows is actually increasing my stress levels which is the exact opposite of what I‘m trying to accomplish.
I’ll have to go slow. I’ll try one new health idea at a time. I don’t need to do it all at once, which I tend to do. So while my mother continues to search for the check I’ll put my focus on enjoying time with my sisters and this week I’ll start with some vitamins.
