“In the Mood,” Big Band Swing Dance Musical Revue, Feb. 16 & 17 at Glendale’s Historic Alex Theatre
“In the Mood” features music that has stood the test of time, says the show’s creator-producer Bud Forrest. “It’s a big band, swing dance musical revue for all generations. It’s a family show for everyone from eight to 98. No matter where we are, whether touring in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or over in Europe, this American music is celebrated as a product of our creativity. That’s what we’ve presented for 20 seasons, offering great songs and melodies that are timeless, such as ‘In the Mood,’ ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,’ ‘Tuxedo Junction,’ ‘Stardust,’ and many more.”
Playing at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale Feb. 16 and 17, “In the Mood” covers the Big Band era mostly from 1935 to 1945. The show’s first half puts the spotlight on the bands before World War II, and the second half highlights how the music united our nation and our soldiers. Forrest says, “It really is a testament to how that music had a spirit with a sense of home and what we were fighting for. Part of our second act is a tribute to all veterans, recognizing those who are in the audience.”
The variety show will have the band on stage featuring 13 great musicians, plus six big band singers and swing dancers who will kick up their heels to the music adored by the greatest generation. The music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, the Andrew Sisters, and many more will fill the theatre. “There’s such a wealth of material,” says pianist and conductor Forrest. “We try to pick out songs that have a purpose. We do complete songs and a lot of medleys, so we touch on about 50 unforgettable hit songs, mostly arranged by the late Vic Schoen, the great musical director and arranger for the Andrew Sisters. He was one of the seminal creators of the swing-era sound that we showcase.”
Presented by Art Beat Shows, “In the Mood” will have three shows at the Alex Theatre (216 N. Brand Blvd. in Glendale), Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m.; and Monday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. For tickets, call (818) 243-ALEX , or go online alextheatre.org.
