Your Tolucan Times is happy to announce the grand prize-winners of the American Airlines contest providing two first-class, round trip tickets. And the winners are… Wendy and Jon Hauptman, long-time Toluca Lake residents whose travel dream has just come true.
When we met the young couple, along with Tolucan Times head honcho Mardi Rustam and his darling wife Sarah, winners Wendy and Jon were still reeling from the surprise. Their hearts and heads are now filled with the wonder of where they will take their special vacation. They can choose from anywhere American Airlines flies in the contiguous 48 states, Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas or the Caribbean. We’ll hear from them after their stylish adventure, and in a way, share the love in the air.

While they decide, we are pleased to present Wendy’s winning love letter:

The Promise

By Wendy Hauptman

Wherever he went, he made a splash. This was especially true at our first meeting in June of 1979. I stood poolside, among 15 other twelve year old girls, anxiously awaiting the arrival of Jon Hauptman. With a swift swagger, he entered the yard and catapulted into a “canon ball” that nearly emptied the pool. As the new girl in the neighborhood, I was immediately smitten by this six-foot tall whirlwind. The feeling was mutual; I could tell by the way he begged me to play “spin the bottle!”
Three years at Madison Junior High cemented our friendship and served as the background for our budding love. In 9th grade, we were voted “Best Couple.” That summer, Jon made two improbable promises: to take me to the 12th grade Prom, and to one day marry me.
The next three years were spent at Grant High School. True to his promise, Jon took me to Prom. We were once again voted “Best Couple.”
The college years were tougher, (me at UCLA and Jon at CSUN). Fortunately, our long-time crush morphed into an undeniable love that withstood the challenges of separate campuses.
True to his word, in 1991 Jon fulfilled his final promise by making me his wife. We bought a house in Toluca Woods. 17 years later, our house is a home; packed with 3 amazing daughters (Natalie, Isabella and Brooke), our dog Theo and cat Mitzy.
Four years ago, I beat breast cancer. My gift was another promise from Jon. He promised to leave his job (which required much travel), and find something that would keep him close to home. In his words, “I could never put a price on the time we have together.” Today we both work together from our home office. Our love has never been stronger!

Bon voyage, Wendy and Jon! Have a safe, happy flight to your special destination!
