Martin M. Cooper Boys & Girls Club Scholarship Recipient Announced
Erik Echegoyen is the first recipient of the Martin M. Cooper Boys & Girls Club Scholarship. The $4,000 scholarship was established to benefit a Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) incoming freshman who is, or was, a member of the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley.
Echegoyen, an immigrant from Mexico City, says that education has always been a priority in his life. He understands the importance of a college education, as it will provide him with the skills he needs to pursue a career in linguistics and enable him to “live the American Dream.”
“We live in a global era where the United States has economic, political, and technological relationships with many countries. I believe the field of linguistics will provide me with endless possibilities for employment in many fields.”
In addition to his educational goals, Echegoyen enjoys playing the guitar and piano. He is also an athlete, having represented his school in Mexico in the regional championships in the long jump and triple jump events.
Echegoyen, along with other LAVC scholarship recipients, will be honored at a special ceremony at LAVC in early Fall 2013.
Cooper, president of the public relations firm Cooper Communications, Inc., and a long-time supporter and former member of the Boys & Girls Club, said, “It is a privilege to have the opportunity to help a young person fulfill their dream of a college education.”
Los Angeles Valley College is a public two-year college that provides residents of the San Fernando Valley with transfer education, career technical education, and lifelong learning.
