Model-Doctors Make Fashion Show for PSJMC Guild a Fabulous Event
The hoots and the hollering heard from the Universal Sheraton Grand Ballroom were radiating from the most proper ladies who support the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center Guild. So what was making the gals go wild? Simply seeing their doctors strutting their stuff on the runway, along with the oh-so-lovely professional models that made the Guild’s annual fashion show luncheon a fabulous success. The event is the flagship fundraiser for the Guild’s pledge of one million dollars to the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center. The hard-working guild President Lucy Brown gave thanks to “our fine doctors for graciously and elegantly escorting the models down the runway. And for taking on their own modeling assignments with great style and charm. No wonder they are such a hit year after year.”
The event had the theme “Destination Brazil,” and the ballroom truly had a carnival atmosphere, sprinkled with laughs by master of ceremonies Harold Greene. The award-winning journalist from CBS 2 News and KCAL told some G-rated jokes, and a fun story about 95-year-old dynamo
Grace Patz (she has done it all for the Guild). Even Sister Rose Byrne was caught giggling. Reverend James A. Toal was more serious when he blessed the event and called the Guild women a “gift and a grace, those who touch lives.” The Medical Director of the Cancer Center, Dr. Raul Mena (who was the honorary director of the event with his wife Barbara), talked about cancer care and prevention, and amused the crowd when he suggested that “a gift certificate for a colonoscopy makes a great present for any occasion.” He wasn’t kidding.
Chairperson of the spring event committee, Donna Mahoney thanked the co-chair Ollie Vick, and proudly announced that through wonderful events like the luncheon fashion show, the Guild has reached more than half their million dollar goal. Cheers echoed throughout the ballroom.
Carin Holmenas produced the dazzling fashion show that showcased the new spring clothing lines of major designers. The runway models showed off the stunning Hartnell Collection from Loudes Chavez, Lilly Pulitzer’s Cabana, Belusso swimwear and furs from Edwards-Lowell. Terry Campbell (press chairwoman also in charge of the guest models) told me that once the doctors have walked the runway, “They look forward to it every year. They enjoy it so much.” That was very evident by the big smiles from the “celebrity physicians,” including Doctors Marc Botnick, Boyd Flinders, John McGroarty, Stephen McNeese, Raul Mena, Raffi-Jean Mesrobian, Augusto Silva, Raymond Tatevossian, Stephan Yacoubian and Joe Naylor, Executive Director of Providence St. Joseph Foundation.
The Guild’s pledge to the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center helps the facility that will be a comprehensive cancer center serving the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and the San Gabriel Valleys. Lucy Brown said the PSJMC Guild is committed to raising funds throughout the year by donating volunteer hours to the Gift Gallery in the Medical Center as well as presenting spring and fall events, card parties and other fundraising efforts. “We enthusiastically welcome ladies interested in joining our Guild. Believe me, you will experience the rewards of making an important difference in the world of quality healthcare and feel the great satisfaction of being part of a first-class organization.” Amen!
