The 85th Academy Awards were a great night out for moms. It was really wonderful to see a parade of maternal arm-candy on the red carpet with the number of stars who brought their mothers as their dates. And it seems they were a good-luck charm for some winners who gave heartwarming and emotional speeches thanking their moms.

Matthew McConaughey had a double date for his big night, his mom Kay and his wife Camila, who were happy to be there to see him win his Academy Award for Best Actor for his riveting role in Dallas Buyers Club. He thanked them both with profuse praise during his acceptance speech. McConaughey said, “To my mother who’s here tonight, who taught me and my two older brothers— demanded that we respect ourselves. And what we in turn learned was that we were then better able to respect others. Thank you for that, Mama. To my wife, Camila, and my kids Levi, Vida and Mr. Stone, the courage and significance you give me every day I go out the door is unparalleled. You are the four people in my life that I want to make the most proud of me.” He also told everyone that he was picturing his dad “up there with a big pot of gumbo” and a cold beer celebrating his son’s victory with a dance.

On stage at the Dolby Theatre in the heart of Hollywood, Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor for Dallas Buyers Club, Jared Leto proudly shared his deep appreciation of the struggles his mother Constance endured so that he could stand there with the award in his hand.

Leto revealed, “In 1971, Bossier City, Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school dropout and a single mom, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children. She encouraged her kids to be creative, to work hard and to do something special. That girl is my mother and she’s here tonight. And I just want to say, I love you, Mom. Thank you for teaching me to dream.”

Sharing the love with another family member, his brother Shannon was also there and Jared called him “the best big brother in the world, a true artist, and my best friend.” Backstage Jared continued to tell everyone in the press room how proud he was to bring her to the Oscars. “She’s everything. She has inspired me in ways that I could talk about for days. My mom and my brother are the two most important people in my life, and I’m really fortunate to be able to thank them in such a unique and grand way.”

Best Supporting Actress Lupita Nyong’o, for 12 Years A Slave, was poised and humble backstage talking with the press, and gave credit to her “phenomenal parents. My father is famous in his own right, has done amazing things for our country, Kenya, and my mother, too. She’s a trailblazer, a pioneer. To watch those two people do so much and mean so much to everyone but at the end of the day still have the humility to serve.” Lupita reported that their example have taught her that “deeds are more important than my fame.”

Supporting Actor nominee for The Wolf of Wall Street, Jonah Hill brought his mom Sharon, who got a big laughed when Ellen DeGeneres joked about Jonah’s full-frontal scenes. Also going home without an award, but with his mom, Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Actor nominee for The Wolf of Wall Street, brought his mother Irmelin Indenbirken, who was beaming during their stroll down the red carpet. Nebraska’s Best Actor nominee Bruce Dern brought his actress-daughter Laura Dern along with his wife Andrea Beckett. DeGeneres pointed out that Dern’s godmother was Eleanor Roosevelt. Really!

Carrying on the family themed love fest at the Dolby was Gravity’s winning director Alfonso Cuaron, who also took home an Oscar for Film Editing sharing the honor with Mark Sanger. Credit goes to his son Jonas, who encouraged Alfonso to direct Gravity, which they co-wrote. Also beaming at the Oscars was Scandal star Kerry Washington, who is a stunning mother-to-be.

Oscar’s big night turned out to be a great Mother’s Day.
