When Margaret Sanders talks about serving her country during World War II, she can’t hold back tears. They are not tears of sorrow, however, but tears of pride. “I was very proud of my uniform when I was overseas,” she explains. “I was proud to be an American.”

Sanders, 83, is one of 15 veterans living at Scholl Canyon Estates in Glendale who were recognized with Certificates of Recognition on Memorial Day.

Sanders called her two years in the service in England “a really good two years. They were lovely people and I loved high tea!”

The ceremony, which included a special luncheon for residents, family, and friends, began with the Glendale Police Honor Guard, and included representatives of the La Crescenta American Legion and the La Crescenta VFW who served in Vietnam. Providing musical entertainment was Daryl Spencer of Toluca Lake.

According to Scott Randon, Manager of Scholl Canyon Estates, the ceremony was an effort on behalf of their parent company, Hawthorne Properties, to pay tribute to all the veterans living in their facilities.

Doug Smith, 87, was honored for service in both World War II (1944–46) and Korea (1951–53). Drafted right out of high school, Smith served as a medic and has vivid memories of “shells bursting and the awful noise they made. I was grateful because I was in the medics and never tried to hurt anyone or had anyone try to hurt me.”

The G.I. Bill paid for his education, which gave him the teaching credentials he needed to teach high school after the wars.
