Teen Choice 2011 Will Celebrate the Hottest Teen Icons
It’s the annual special that puts the spotlight on the hottest teen icons in film, television, music, sports, comedy and fashion. So tune in to the Teen Choice Awards 2011 if you want to know what the kids are buzzing about. The star-studded event airs live Sunday, August 7, from the Gibson Amphitheater at Universal Studios Hollywood.
It’s no surprise that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse leads the Teen Choice nominees this year with 12 nominations. Glee has nine; The Vampire Diaries has seven, while The Hangover Part II, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez each earned six nominations. The ABC Family dramas Pretty Little Liars got five nods along with the network’s new Switched at Birth, which has proved to be an instant hit with kids.
Recently I talked with Lucy Hale, one of the lovely stars of the Pretty Little Liars hit mystery series, now in its second season. Lucy said the show has changed her life, but not dramatically. “My personal life hasn’t really changed. I get recognized here and there, but I don’t get chased around by the paparazzi or anything. My life is just a lot busier, and I get to go to fun events and wear dresses that I would never get to wear,” she’s happy to report.
The coolest stars, best films and most-loved TV shows of the past year will receive fun awards for Choice Hottie, Choice TV Villain, Choice Movie Lip Lock and Choice Twit, among many other categories.
The CW series Nikita has been nominated for Choice Action Show, along with its lovely stars Maggie Q and Lyndsy Fonseca vying for the Choice Action Actress title. During the last TV press tour, I talked with Maggie and Lyndsy to find out if guys like the kick-butt women they portray. Maggie simply told me, “I think a guy who doesn’t like a tough chick is a loser.” Because she plays such a strong woman, Lyndsy said, “I feel very safe at night walking to my car alone.” That’s what her action role has done for her confidence.
Seven time Grammy-winning artist, the Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am is set to spin music’s hottest tracks as the “Choice” DJ at the awards event. And music sensation and nominee Jason Derulo will perform his new single “Don’t Wanna Go Home.”
Also set to appear at the ceremony is a parade of super-popular celebrities. They include Justin Bieber, Joe Jonas, Ashton Kutcher, Zooey Deschanel, Kirsten Bell, Tyra Banks, Jason Bateman, Rachel Bilson, Cat Deeley, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Taylor Lautner, Joel McHale, Taylor Swift and Maggie Q, among others.
Bringing everyone together is executive producer Bob Bain, who reports, “I am thrilled to have Teen Choice 2011 air live once again on Fox. Since news travels fast across social media and the internet, this allows us to deliver all the excitement and surprises in real time to teens across America.” The winners are chosen by the young fans who vote for their favorites.
Masterpiece Mystery’s Hot Detective Zen
Now let’s talk about a show for more mature audiences. The Masterpiece Mystery series Zen began on Sunday, and presents a trilogy of the crime stories written by novelist Michael Dibdin over the next two Sundays (airing on PBS SoCal KOCE). The whodunit stories are based on Dibdin’s popular Zen novels, Vendetta, Cabal and Ratking.
With hot-blooded matinee idol looks, Rufus Sewell plays Detective Aurelio Zen, who you’ll never mistake for Detective Columbo. The stunningly visual production filmed on location in Rome, where the main character works with the murder squad to solve cases infused with political corruption, pompous aristocrats and, of course, the mafia.
It’s not easy to be an honest cop in a modern and corrupt Italy. With smarts, charm and a little luck, Detective Zen gets justice where justice is due, which isn’t easy when his bosses are on the side of the lawbreakers. He deals with murders and kidnappings, and navigates his way through the crooked political landscape. There’s romance too, because when in Rome, you do what the Romans do. Tune in and enjoy!
