The Saint Francis Stage Company Presents God’s Favorite
Twenty-seven years is a long time to keep a promise, but sometimes even a few decades can’t stop two friends from making something fun happen.
Back in 1987, Burbank resident and veteran director George Strattan caught a friend’s play performed in a hall at Saint Francis Xavier Church on Scott Road.
“I had directed Daniel Roebuck the year before in No Time for Sergeants at the Glendale Centre Theatre and he invited me to see a production of Godspell he directed as a fund raiser for the Church and School,” Strattan recently said. “He told me then of his hopes to create a theater company there and suggested that, one day, I should direct a show.”
Roebuck went on to a steady career as a television and film actor and eventually his hope of a theater company did finally come to fruition with The Saint Francis Stage Company.
“At heart, it was the perfect scenario to create a community theater because we have a fantastic community at the church. I noticed early on that there were many talented people there and doing some shows was a terrific excuse to get them all together!” Roebuck commented.
“That said,” Roebuck continued, “Our goal is to entertain people as best we can, so sometimes we are happy to look beyond our Church community for other talented people. And that’s why we reached out to George to direct our current production of God’s Favorite by Neil Simon!”
Strattan has directed, produced, and acted in over two hundred plays throughout his career and was happy to come out of retirement for the show. He told the Tolucan Times, “I have seen and loved all of their shows over the last seven years. They always put on very entertaining and professional productions, so I jumped at the chance to be part of a great thing.”
God’s Favorite plays at 8 p.m. on Jan. 10, 11, 17, and 18; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12. Tickets are $15 for the evening shows and the company offers discounted tickets at the matinee. Matinee prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
