Let’s face it. Every time we turn around, we hear the phrase “anti-aging.” Catchy buzzword?
Some don’t mind aging. Charlize Theron told Piers Morgan last week, “The great thing about it has been the acknowledgment of my flaws.” She turns 37 next month. Flaws?
We talked to various celebrities, who seem to watch every morsel they consume and every line on their face. We won’t identify individual secrets, but offer their suggestions.
You can’t start the day off right if you don’t get enough zzzz’s. According to sleep expert, Dr. Ronald Kotler, if you don’t get seven to nine hours of sleep, you are putting your health at risk. While you are sleeping, your brain makes a chemical called lepkin, which is involved in suppressing your appetite.
Hydration is very important, especially in the summer months. Dr. Garth Fisher, a plastic surgeon who just opened a medi-spa in his Beverly Hills offices, knows the skin well. “Moisture is very important. It keeps the skin elastic. You don’t want to have any dry, flaky cells, as your skin is constantly evolving. If it’s not moist, it doesn’t really work very well. In order to maintain integrity of the epidermis and the dermis, moisture is the key.”
Staying youthful can be aided by the amount of alcohol and tobacco one consumes. Beverly Hills dermatologist, Dr. Harold Lancer says, “The biggest mistake people make with their skin is poor lifestyle choices. This includes excessive alcohol and tobacco use, which contributes to skin failure.”
Experts tell us to keep moving, whether it’s a walk, a visit to the gym, a mountain climb or a dance class. Health aficionado, Jack LaLanne lived to 96. Most of us never heard of exercise mavens Jackie Warner or Jillian Michaels until their TV shows became popular.
What’s the least expensive way to participate in the fountain of youth zone? Smile. It’s the best accessory. Ever notice when you smile, others smile back at you? Dr. Mark Stibich says that smiling helps your body to function better, as well as improves health and stress levels, in addition to extending your life.
Nutrition experts suggest adding honey, green tea and garlic to daily food intake. In fact, honey carries more antioxidants than fruit and veggies. The sweet substance contains over 180 different substances of minerals, amino acids, enzymes, bioflavonoids and vitamins, which improves the immune system. It also helps with weight loss. Marona honey is the natural remedy du jour of industry insiders.
A balanced diet is the obvious key to staying youthful. Lean meat, veggies, berries and seeds lower sugar level and reduce blood pressure. Fish is very dietary. Frying, high roasting and char-broiling are the worst, even though it may taste great. Some say that eating raw foods is best for the body.
