Crew on Course
After an historic stretch that saw the Dodgers (76-54) go from last place to first place in the National League West, the team went 4-3 this past week, and even dropped two of three games to Boston at the Stadium.
Jake Peavy (10-5) delivered a complete-game three-hitter, and the offense smashed three homers that highlighted Sunday’s 8-1 thumping by the Red Sox.
A ground-rule double in the first inning by Mike Napoli gave Boston a 1-0 lead, Dustin Pedroia’s sacrifice fly two innings later made it 2-0, Xander Bogaerts’ run-scoring two-base hit in the fourth pushed the lead to 3-0 before Adrian Gonzalez’s homer in the bottom of the fourth cut it to 3-1.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s two-run rocket in the sixth gave Boston a 5-1 advantage, Shane Victorino’s homer in the seventh supplied the Red Sox with a five-run lead, and Napoli’s two-run shot in the ninth made it a seven-run deficit.
The Red Sox tallied all their runs in the first inning of Saturday’s 4-2 win over the Dodgers as Napoli’s run-scoring hit got Boston on the board, and Jonny Gomes lashed a three-run homer for a 4-0 lead.
It took until the eighth inning before the Dodgers scored as Gonzalez’s two-run double cut the lead in half.
Ricky Nolasco (10-9) tamed the Red Sox over eight frames in Friday’s 2-0 blanking as Hanley Ramirez’s two-run homer in the fourth produced all the offense.
Clayton Kershaw (13-7) lowered his big-league best earned-run average to 1.72 while yielding five hits and no runs over eight innings against host Miami as the Dodgers romped to a 6-0 win on Thursday.
Carl Crawford drove in two runs with a double, while Gonzalez singled, doubled and scored a run for the Blue Crew.
Ramirez and Andre Ethier each had two hits with a run batted in as the Dodgers hooked the Marlins 4-1 on Wednesday while supporting Zack Greinke (12-3), who went eight innings and allowed six hits.
Yasiel Puig came off the bench and creamed his 12th homer in the eighth which propelled the Dodgers to a 6-4 triumph on Tuesday over Miami.
Rookie Jose Fernandez (9-5) went six innings and yielded two runs (one earned) with eight strikeouts and three walks as Miami took a 6-2 victory on Monday.
