Falcons Flap Wings

Because Crescenta Valley High’s football team is a perennial power and a frequent CIF Southern Section playoff qualifier, last Friday night’s Pacific League opener against Hoover at Moyse Field could be described as a glorified scrimmage.

Too strong, too big, and too talented, the Falcons scored all their points in the opening half and jetted to a 35-0 triumph.

It could have been much worse had there not been a running clock in the fourth quarter, and CV Head Coach Paul Schilling not benched most of his starters.

“You only get 10 games, and we’re glad we won,’’ said Schilling. “They [Hoover] played hard, but they don’t have the horses.”

The evening belonged to senior quarterback Zachary Wilkerson, who accounted for 220 passing yards, while connecting on 12 of 17 attempts with no interceptions.

Wilkerson had four scoring tosses, with three finding the sure hands of senior wide receiver Nick Ruiz (162 yards on seven catches).

Wilkerson’s other touchdown pass went to Max Cunning and covered 20 yards. It gave CV a 28-0 cushion with 8:24 left in the second quarter.

Hoover (0-4 and 0-1 in league) had to claw for 83 total net yards, and its defense tried to slow down CV’s high-powered offense.

“We kind of had to pick our poison,’’ said Hoover Head Coach Andrew Policky. “We took our chances on the outside, hoping to stop their run, but they passed the ball.”

It took the Falcons (3-1 and 1-0 in league) seven plays to surpass Hoover’s total yards, and finished with 381.

CV was forced to punt on its opening drive, but Wilkerson gave the Falcons a 7-0 lead when he directed his troops 55 yards on four plays. Wilkerson eventually located Ruiz with a 16-yard pass as 6:20 was left on the clock.

After a short punt, CV set up shop at the Hoover 37. Wilkerson (28 yards on four carries) hit Justin Springfield with an 11-yard pass, and after two incomplete passes, junior running back William Wang raced home with a 21-yard score as the Falcons bolted in front 14-0 with 4:40 remaining in the opening quarter.

It became 21-0 when Wilkerson capped a 60-yard, eight-play march after he nailed Ruiz with a 14-yard strike as 10:06 was showing in the second quarter.

The Falcons’ final tally was a 59-yard, four-play drive with Wilkerson and Ruiz teaming up on a 47-yard bomb as 3:34 remained in the second quarter.

CV churned out 153 yards on the ground with Wang adding 94 yards on 12 carries.

Senior running back Luke Tabayoyong paced Hoover with 62 yards on 16 rushes.
