Great Expectations

It seems there is more than enough talent on the Burbank and Burroughs high girls’ basketball teams to make a run at the Pacific League championship.

“I think we can compete for the league title,’’ said Bulldogs Head Coach Bruce Breeden. “We have two players who are injured, but they should be healthy by the first of the year.”

League play begins January 4, with Burbank (0-4) hosting Arcadia and Burroughs (3-1) at Glendale.

The injured players are 5-foot-10 center Courtney Seidler, a four-year starter who averaged eight points with seven rebounds, and 5-7 small forward Lysette Perez, who averaged six points and 4.5 assists for a team that went 19-14, 10-4 in league, advanced to the CIF Southern Section 1-AA semifinals, and played top-seeded Mater Dei in the state tournament.

“We have more players who can do more stuff,’’ said Indians Head Coach Vicky Oganyan, whose team went 7-7 in league and finished 12-16. “In the summer we played 50 games, and the experience from last year has been a tremendous help.”

Jamie Gonzalez is a shooting guard who tallied nine points per game and was selected to the All-CIF second team, Aja Locke will play power forward and averaged eight rebounds and six points, while Sharis Ghazeri is a point guard who dropped six points with 3.5 assists.

Burbank’s reserves include Ashley Linda at small forward and she averaged 14 points for the junior varsity, Alicia McCord at power forward and she tallied eight points with six caroms for the JV, Ratiana Karapet at point guard and she averaged six points and five assists for the JV, and Karina Miller, a shooting guard nicknamed “Bulldog’’ because of her willingness to guard anyone.

Fatima Cisneros will play small forward, Abby Troy, a transfer will play small forward, Samantha Ainian at forward, Araxi Zakarian at point guard, Lexy Alger at center, and Karley Meza at small forward.

The Burroughs starters include Aysia Shellmire, a 6-1 center and four-year varsity performer who made first team all-league after averaging 15.4 points and 9.4 rebounds, Davina Del Castillo, a forward who grabbed 9.3 boards and Jakarra Waddell at forward.

Sidney Ortega is a shooting guard who averaged 5.4 points with 1.3 steals, and Delaney Nicol at point guard.

Reserves include Bailee Trotta, Molly Holt, Jordan Meltzer, Paula Galicia, Ashley Holmes, Abbey Ibarra and Kaitlin Okimoto.
