Steady Wins Race
Sometimes slow and steady prevail. It worked out that way for the St. Francis High baseball team last Saturday in the Arcadia Invitational.
After trailing early, it took a late rally by the Golden Knights to secure a 9-4 victory over West Covina in a pool play game.
St. Francis had 12 hits, but also made errors in the fifth that allowed the Bulldogs to tie it.
The Golden Knights responded by tallying runs in the sixth and seventh. A pair of passed balls gave the Golden Knights (6-8) their first two runs in the first inning.
David Olmedo-Barrera singled to open the frame and scored on a passed ball. Tei Vanderford singled and came around on a passed ball.
The Bulldogs didn’t have a hit through four frames off starter Ryan Garcia and Daniel Monarrez.
Cole Ramseyer didn’t find the sledding so smooth as he allowed two runs in the fifth which tied it at 2-2.
Olmedo-Barrera doubled to lead off the sixth. Jeff Garavaglia’s grounder was misplayed as Olmedo-Barrera scored to make it 3-2. Tom Scheper singled home Garavaglia to make it 4-2.
It became a three-run lead when Anders Schraer scored when Tynan Holmstrom reached on an error.
The Golden Knights added four runs in the next inning with Garavaglia getting a two-run single and Scheper a two-run triple.
Meanwhile, the Burbank Bulldogs (3-6) fell to Serra 8-4 in a nonleague match on Saturday as Paul Frias and Dylan Mersola each drove in a run and collected a pair of hits.
The previous day, Burbank scored five runs in the second against host Crescenta Valley in a Pacific League match, but it wasn’t enough as the Falcons erased the early deficit for an 8-5 win.
CV (5-3 and 3-0 in league) scored runs in five of six innings versus the Bulldogs, and Bryce Foster made it 6-5 after he stole home. Ted Boeke’s two-run double made it 8-5.
In other action, Hoover was handed a 3-1 setback in a Pacific League game versus host Pasadena (4-5 and 1-2 in league) on Friday as Andrew Phillips (nine strikeouts and six walks) tossed a no-hitter.
Hoover (3-8-1 and 1-2 in league) scored its run on a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.
