“There is Truth, Love is Real” Documents Relationship

As “Him,” Anthony Storwick is about to have his world turned upside-down

Imaginatively staged and featuring fine performances, “There is Truth, Love is Real,” Doug Oliphant’s professional directing debut, combines contemporary movement and dance, video/photo montage, and rock music. Set to the music from The Postal Service’s album “Give Up,” the production tells the story of two young lovers who break up and attempt to carry on as friends.
Oliphant crafts the story entirely around songs from the album, with the music becoming the dialogue, as the actors speak no lines.
Headliners Anthony Storwick and Bridgette Patchen possess strong chemistry and naturalness with each other. Patchen brings a touching vulnerability to the young ingénue, while Storwick imbues the young man with sensitivity and thoughtfulness. The rest of the cast possess high energy, athletic abililty, and work well together.
Director Oliphant keeps the action constantly moving, wisely using the small space by creating pockets of action. He employs choreography and combination dance/yoga moves to further the plot, revealing how couples can connect or break apart.
Production work is also outstanding. Rand Segers artfully arranges props and simulations of sets like windows and platforms to represent homes, beds, etc. Fine photography and film work by Scott Roukema and Peter Berube document the young lovers’ connection. Sabrina Beattie’s lighting helps provide atmosphere. Unfortunately the songs sometimes lack enunciation, making them occasionally difficult to understand.
“There is Truth, Love is Real” vividly projects the passion and heartbreak of young love through all forms of media in an exciting visceral presentation.
