Alvin Sputnik to the Rescue at Orange County’s Segerstrom Center
Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa kicks off its 2013 – 2014 Family Explorer Series with the unforgettable story The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer performed by master storyteller Tim Watts and the Perth Theatre Company on Oct. 18—20 in the Center’s Samueli Theater. Sputnik is a multi-award-winning, one-man, micro-epic puppet show that shares the poignant story of enduring love and the possibility of the world’s end. It’s a blend of technology and multimedia that The New York Times describes as “…an endearing Australian solo show told in stick-figure animation and puppetry … akin to a theatrical Wall-E.”
The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer is a tiny tale about a solitary explorer with a heart as big as a whale. The seas have risen, the lives of billions have been lost, and those who have survived live on farms atop skyscrapers or mountains. While scientists are constantly researching alternate new places to call home, science and humanity turn to the oceans for help. This monumental goal of saving the human race requires journeying down through the mysterious depths of the deep blue sea and Alvin Sputnik is the one to accept this perilous mission. Created and performed by Watts, he employs unique methods of mime, puppetry, music, and animation to present this story of exploration and hope.
Arrive early to enjoy an hour of free pre-show play activities. The Center’s Education and Community Programs Department offers these enriching experiences to provide young people and their parents more opportunities to play together creatively.
