CART’s May 29th presentation of acclaimed Norman Corwin comedies, Murder in Studio One and Mary and The Fairy, with Corwin To Attend
On Saturday, May 29th a once in a century lifetime performance will be presented by the California Artists Radio Theatre (CART), in tribute to Norman Corwin’s 100th birthday. Two great Corwin radio plays, Murder in Studio One and Mary and the Fairy, will feature an impressive list of stars: JoAnne Worley, Marvin Kaplan, Samantha Eggar, Monte Markham, Shelley Long, Phil Proctor, Paul Keith, Tom Williams, Richard Herd, and John Harlan. And the Emmy and Peabody Award winning playwright-author Corwin, called “the poet laureate of radio,” plans to attend. CART’s founder and creative director, Peggy Webber will direct the shows.
“Norman Corwin’s comedies are special because he is such an intelligent writer. His scripts are so good, that you could cold read his stuff and it would be just perfect. He’s brilliant,” says JoAnne Worley, who plays Mary in Mary and The Fairy. She plays opposite a very special “Fairy,” character actor Marvin Kaplan. “If you were casting fairies, he would not be the first person you would think of, but he puts a Brooklyn spin on the role that is magic.”
Worley has been part of the CART troupe for many years. “Radio is very special because I don’t have to wear my false eyelashes when I perform,” she jokes. “But really, I do it because I’m with a great group of people, and it’s fun. Radio allows you to imagine.”
Webber explains that CART carries on the great tradition of radio dramas and comedies with a rich literary heritage. And she notes that Corwin, who turned 100 years old in May, continues writing for radio, and was a cornerstone for the “Golden Age” of radio dramas in the 1930s and ’40s. The renown writer, producer, and essayist, is also still active at the Journalism School at USC.
All seats for CART’s Corwin Comedies are $10, May 29th at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn’s Beverly Garland Theatre, 4222 North Vineland (south of Moorpark), North Hollywood. For Reservations call 213-683-3422, or go to www.cartaudio.org and order through PayPal.
