Featuring tunes from the great American songbook as well as newer Broadway/movie show tunes, Elate Theatre’s entertaining musical revue Forever Young demonstrates the power of good music to make one feel alive. The production combines cast members ranging from 9 to 81 singing and dancing to music appealing to all ages.

Producer/director Carol Bratcher mixes together solos, combos, and large ensembles in musical medleys as well as special solo songs, all celebrating the joy of music. Gentle humor and simple choreography build on song themes. The first act spotlights Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, and Les Miserables, while the second act focuses more on films and popular music. Spotlight numbers are sprinkled throughout the show.

The numbers featuring special rhythmic sections highlight the presentation, adding sparkle and imagination. “When I’m Gone” features claps and tapping plastic cups adding an intriguing backbeat to the song. The invigorating tap dance number, “Whistle,” features exuberant, precise tapping.

Singers such as Ronata Longmire, Vicki Kirk, Debbie Lowe, and Kevin Becker show great pitch, range, and expression, both in voice and acting. “Swing, Swing, Swing” salutes the Andrew sisters. Marilyn Lazik adds nice comic flair and sizzle to “He Vas My Boyfriend.”

The recorded music occasionally overwhelmed the singers, a few of whom seemed nervous and unsure of cues.

The feel good, entertaining show, Forever Young, highlights the joys and excitement of moving music appealing to the whole family.
