GGC Players Puts One Acts on the Table at Theatre Unlimited
The Gloria Gifford Conservatory and GGC Players are serving Original (Very) Short and (Almost) Sweet One-Acts on Saturday and Sunday evenings currently running at Theatre Unlimited in the NoHo Arts District.
Each night thirteen shows are shuffled in the lineup and actors are rotated in the roles as well. In fact, in some cases a man might be doing a role and another night a woman might fill that role.
All in all it made for a nice night of theater with an opportunity to see more than 20 diverse performers in a variety of small plays each about 10 minutes in length.
My favorites included “Actors Helping Actors Anonymously” penned by Jade Warner and Joshua Lee Farmer for its clever twist on another sort of AA type of group, but packed with all the challenges of the acting profession.
Tracey-Ann-Marie Nelson’s “Father Heineken” was a fun romp as a man on the run hides briefly in a confessional and begins to take on the role of a priest while eating his lunch.
“Ten Minutes in Heaven” by Bill Stevenson was a sweet slice of pretend and reality with a strong romantic feel.
Leana Chavez and Cynthia San Luis co-wrote “Speed Dating” as a fast-paced and well-timed look at potential dating conversations in a marked flow.
The Douglas Dennard written “Freedom Riders” was well cast with some solid acting and was the most serious piece of the night joining in the mix with light pieces.
The show runs till Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. on Saturdays and 7:30 p.m. on Sundays at Theatre Unlimited (TU) located at 10943 Camarillo St. in North Hollywood. Tickets are $20. For more information, call (313) 366-5505, or visit nohoartsdistrict.com or GloriaGiffordConservatory.com.
