Girls Just Want to Have Fun in “Girlesque”
With trendy burlesque bars making a huge comeback nationwide and Dita Von Teese as America’s most popular pin-up, Hollywood’s Next Stage Theater presents Girlesque, a ‘naughty but nice’ musical dance revue. Written by uber creative Chris Berube, the show gives “every girl her day and every woman her time” to shine in this enthusiastic, high-energy production.
Girlesque opens with Madame Mama, the exuberant ring leader (Ariel Staehle), luring an innocent wide-eyed woman (cleverly planted in the audience) onto the stage amidst the mystical world of the “Sirens,” an assortment of femme fatales, ranging from nurses to princesses, business execs and schoolgirls. A most impressive musical number is “When You’re Good to Mama” from Broadway’s Chicago, as the dancing girls strut their stuff, revealing more and more, in an illusional striptease.
A bit of skin, along with comedic bits and medley of music and choreography (by Web Crystal) perfectly complements the variety of vignettes. One quite memorable act is the sexy cowgirl (Jennifer Josy), clad in plaid midriff and denim short-shorts, cowboy hat and boots, who ‘romps and sashays in the hay,’ to the tune of Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Were Made for Walking.” This crowd-pleaser is sure to knock the audience’s boots off.
Although the show’s subject matter is coarse and raw, the characters (much like Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author) are multi-dimensional, with dreams, hopes, fantasies and imagination that come to life.
These girls on stage bare their bodies and inner souls beneath their glitzy corsets, belly rings and lace panties. A perfect girls’ or guys’ night out, Girlesque will entertain, titillate and play with fate on this relaxing, yet rowdy, arousing journey.
“Girlesque” plays Saturday nights at 8pm at the Next Stage Theater (1533 N. La Brea Ave.).
