Love Sucks — A ‘Cult Hit’ at the Coast
Love Sucks, the extravagant farce hit at Coast Playhouse, owes its success to its skillful ensemble and amazing writer/director Rob Mersola. Having trained at Rutgers University Professional Actor’s Training Program and the William Esper Studio, the cast goes way back and has a strong history together; thus, the natural chemistry in this play, which is all about relationships, shines through. Anil Kumar (Guiseppe) credits his admiration to his fellow cast, to Jack Kerouac‘s quote: “The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time,“ Anil says. “We have trust in each other whether the scene is ridiculous/silly or big and full of emotion. I am so far from my character, but we connect. I wish I could hypnotize like that and live out the fantasy as this gigolo!”
Unequivocally, the cast agrees that amidst their many stints (TV, film, even long-running Broadway runs), Love Sucks has been an amazing ride, and “by far, above, and beyond, an experience extraordinaire, as both actors and human beings.”
Jeni Verdon states, “This role has struck a chord in my life.” She identifies strongly with a quote by Helen Keller on risk-taking: “Security is mostly a superstition. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.”
Joshua Bitton (Calvin), best known for his performance in HBO’s The Pacific, feels there is no comparison between the skill set of screen work and the dynamic of being onstage. “Theater fills my soul — I crave it. There’s nothing like being in front of a live audience — it’s like a drug. It’s theater I keep coming back to.“
The play’s been done “a million times,” yet every night Love Sucks brings a unique experience. The cast concurs:
