No plays to review for you this time. Like most things in life… it’s feast or famine
Some weeks, there are more “critique requests” than I can handle… and other weeks… “zip!” There’s an old Depression-era line… “There’s no such thing as a free lunch”… but occasionally you can catch a “Free” theatrical entertainment event. Let me tell you about a few current “no charge” onstage “happenings.” The first one will be over by the time this column prints, but the others you can still catch!
Four Pilots for the Price of None – at Theatre West
Hosted onstage by Ted Lange (from TV’s Love Boat) and written by Lloyd J. Schwartz, this comedic set of four one-act pilots was a lot of fun! They were titled: “Pop 7,” “Do Us Part,” “Behind Big Bucks” and “And Baby Makes Three.” Featuring a whopping cast of nearly 40 Theatre West members, each act is currently being considered for television series. It was an added treat to see one of LA’s hardest working theatrical publicists… (and actor) Philip Sokoloff in a quirky role too! Too late for you to catch this one… but I felt compelled to praise the effort!
After Miss Julie – at Studio City’s Ventura Court Theatre
This one written by Patrick Marber, will run five nights in a row (March 24 through the 28) as an industry showcase for a trio of “up and coming stars.” Three gorgeous young actors seeking representation and broader recognition: Kaitlyn Benson, Mariana Klaveno (from HBO’s True Blood) and “hunky” British import, Dominic Adams, invite you to share in their vision… and bring along every industry “big-wig” you can round up. A 1940s piece… as an added bonus, all will be attired in vintage clothing from my own store, “Hubba Hubba!” For showtimes, availability and “freebie” seats, visit firstname.lastname@example.org.
Mrs. Robinson – at Tarzana’s “Harper’s Bar & Grill,” Wednesdays nights at 9:30
No cover charge! A rockin’ party! I haven’t seen them yet myself, but am told that they are fabulous! I plan to gather up some friends and catch them ASAP! Billed as “an ultimate entertainment experience,” they perform the “hits” we all know and love, from the 1960s to current day… with multiple whacky wig and costume changes. Four mid-aged male vocalists and two attractive identical twin sisters sing and play their hearts out! These seasoned musicians have in the past worked with mega bands/singers, such as Guns N’ Roses, Alice Cooper, Cher, Chuck Berry, Carole King, Edgar Winters, and BB King, just to name a few… and are available for large concert events too. To enjoy a tasty sample of their “kick-butt” set, go to www.MrsRobinson.biz. See you there?
Back next week with my opinions on two “opening night” productions. As I close my column for this time… I am “snug as a bug” on a rainy Sunday afternoon still in my PJ’s, sipping a glass of wine. Think I’ll treat myself to a wee nap!
