No plays to review this week, but let me preview a trio of enticing upcoming productions I’ll be telling you all about in the next month
They all sound like “viewpoints” on human nature … with a light and lively look at life, love, and “the games people play.”
In the Next Room or the Vibrator Play
An intimate Los Angeles theatrical premiere, written by Sarah Ruhl, this hysterical Pulitzer and Tony celebrated comedy soon opens in NoHo. Said to be a “titillating,” funny, and truthful look at human sexuality during the Victorian era, it explores the invention of a new electric “vibrating” device, designed to become an intimate friend to ladies whose husbands are lacking in “sexual creativity.” Directed by August Viverito and boasting a cast of seven … this one sounds like a bit of “naughty” fun! Opening Aug. 23 at The Secret Rose Theatre in NoHo. To book seats early call (800) 838-3006 or go to theprodeb.com.
Written by Adam Qwan, directed by Angel Creeks, and featuring a quartet of young actors, this musical sounds enticingly entertaining. Four newly transplanted young New Yorkers’ lives intertwine as they search for fulfillment, love, happiness … and cabs. Said to be poignantly humorous, they experience “true to life” happenstances as they struggle to appreciate the simple things … in a decidedly complex city. Promising vibrantly memorable songs, and touching scenes “with a message” … I look forward to this one. Opening Sept. 6 at The Victory Theatre in Burbank. I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change
One of the most hilariously entertaining and relatable stage shows about relationships ever … I saw this musical in New York in the ‘90s. It ran “off Broadway” at that same theatre for 5,003 performances! Studying and celebrating the dynamics of romance & marriage from the “inside/out,” through clever songs and kooky repartee … a talented cast of four will tickle your funny bone, and awaken memories of the “loves” in your life. An infectiously loveable musical revue! Written by Joe DiPietro (Book/Lyrics) and Jimmy Roberts (Music), and Directed here by Gary Lou Reed, this show is ingeniously clever, and a heart full of fun! Presented by the excellent Crown City Theatre troupe, I am confident in encouraging you to catch it … before I even see it myself. Opening Sept. 12 in North Hollywood. To book seats now call (818) 605-5685 or go to crowncitytheatre.com.
Ladies Night Reminder
I recently wrote a piece on Burbank’s monthly “Ladies Night Out” (the last Friday of each month). With most of the vintage, antique, and eclectic shops open until at least 9 o’clock along Magnolia Boulevard in the Magnolia Park area and dozens of “yummy” food trucks … it has become a big monthly “happening” in the three years since it started! This month it falls on Friday, Aug. 30. Do remember to “check it out” … Many of the stores offer snacks and beverages too! You’ll likely run into friends you already know, and make some news ones too….
Well, that’s my story for this week. Life is meant for living … Get out and have some fun!
