A joyous celebration of music and community, Burbank Community Theater’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music features excellent singing and acting in an entertaining presentation for all ages. Blending the contributions of around 150 people, the musical demonstrates the educational and social importance of local theatre.

The classic story of The Sound of Music revolves around novice nun Maria (Jackie Brenneman) serving as governess to Captain von Trapp’s (Jordan Byers) seven children. Can she bring happiness and music into the home in a time of national distress?

Director Janee Hull-Swift creates a gorgeous tableaux and beautiful images by employing the aisles and seating areas. Particularly dramatic scenes are staged almost in darkness with candles and flashlights. She’s able to keep the energy and story flowing, even while moving a large cast.

The entire cast gives strong performances, led by terrific Brenneman. Her feisty, playful Maria steals hearts with her soaring voice and charming personality. Rachelle Woolston’s warm, enveloping presence and strong voice as the Mother Abbess highlights proceedings. Flirtatious Michelle Williams gives Elsa Schraeder bite and élan. Nevada Brandt’s Liesl is gentle and vulnerable.

All seven kids possess strong chemistry and personality, blending well in voice and timing.

The volunteer orchestra gives firm, strong accompaniment to proceedings, with a large, full tone.
