Wild A Midsummer Saturday Night’s Fever Dream from the Troubadour Theater Company, at The Falcon Theatre
The Shakespeare quote “What fools these mortals be” could easily be applied to the folks with the Troubadour Theater Company. That’s because they have taken on the epic task of fusing the Bard’s complex A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the disco hits from Saturday Night Fever. Yet director Matt Walker is no fool at the helm of all the madness and makes the “faerie tale” work. He also showcases his superb comedy skills along with classical Shakespearean training in his role as the rascally elf Puck, who delivers the “fools” line and most of the outrageous humor in the show.
The entire Troubie troupe is equally awesome performing about a dozen popular ’70s songs such as the Bee Gees’ “Staying Alive” and “How Deep Is Your Love.” Playing comedic couples wild with passion and a knack for breaking into disco fever songs and dancing are Beth Kennedy and Joseph Leo Bwarie; Katherine Malak and Tyler King; Matt Merchant and Monica Schneider; Morgan Rusler and Suzanne Jolie Narbonne. Rick Batalla as Bottom is hysterical, and there are funny Faeries too who literally bounce around. Rob Nagle, Mike Sulprizio, Lisa Valenzuela, Liz Beebe, and Joseph Keane round out the energetic cast.
There’s as much talent behind the scenes as there is on stage, including musical director Eric Heinly, choreographer Molly Alvarez, lighting designer Jeremy Pivnick, set designer Jeffrey McLaughlin, and costume designer Sharon McGunigle.
A Midsummer Saturday Night’s Fever Dream is at the Falcon Theatre in Toluca Lake now through July 7. Call the box office at (818) 955-8101, or go to FalconTheatre.com.
