“This place is THE bomb!” exclaims Yvette on the website Yelp! “I live in Highland Park,” she says, “And [I] haven’t found an amazing, home cooked-style, authentic restaurant in the area … but the Mr. and I came here today … and FELL IN LOVE!”
So it goes for Ernie Jr’s Taco House in Eagle Rock, an L.A. dining fixture for 68 years.
The flavors of Ernie Jr’s were created and developed by the Cruz family in the cultural region of Northern Mexico. It’s there where the family began creating authentic Mexican recipe dishes. And yes, there really is an “Ernie” in charge of operations — Ernie Cruz Jr., now in his 60’s and still referred to as “Jr.”
With the exception of some new items, not much has changed with the restaurant’s very thorough menu throughout the years, even as times change and trends come and go. Ernie Jr’s will always stay true to the roots of their family recipes — recipes that have their patrons coming back for more of those famous “Flavors of Northern Mexico.”
As for Yvette, her review goes on to extol the virtues of the “adorable vintage ‘70s decor, the sweetest waitress, free chips and super delicious salsa that I could’ve spooned straight from the bowl into my mouth, great prices, fast service, huge servings, and a beautiful view.” Wow! Let’s go.
