Battle Is Uphill

The hill is steep for the Dodgers (29-39), who still haven’t made their way out of last place in the National League West.

This past weekend at Pittsburgh, the Blue Crew dropped two of three games to the Pirates, including Sunday’s 6-3 drubbing behind rookie Gerrit Cole (2-0), the No. 1 overall pick in 2011 out of UCLA, who went five and two-third innings and allowed seven hits with three runs (earned).

Tim Federowicz’s grounder in the second inning scored Yasiel Puig (three hits), and Andre Ethier (two hits) delivered a run batted in during the fourth and sixth inning.

Clayton Kershaw’s seven-inning, three-hit, one-run (earned) outing went down the drain as Kenley Jansen blew a one-run lead in the ninth before the Dodgers rallied for a 5-3 win in 11 innings on Saturday.

Juan Uribe had an RBI and scored a run, Ethier (three hits) drove in a run and scored one, and Nick Punto contributed a run-scoring double.

Skip Schumaker’s RBI in the fifth knotted it at 1-1, Ethier’s hit in the sixth scored Adrian Gonzalez, who opened with a double, and Mark Ellis lifted a scoring fly to make it 3-1.

The Dodgers were swept aside 3-0 on Friday behind Jeff Locke (6-1), who worked seven innings and yielded two hits, while Andrew McCutchen (two hits) had two RBIs and scored a run for the Pirates.

Arizona tallied four runs in the 12th which resulted in an 8-6 victory at the Stadium on Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks used a 20-hit barrage with Cody Ross (four hits) scoring two runs, Miguel Montero (four hits) adding an RBI with two runs, and Gerardo Parra (three hits) finishing with two RBIs.

The Dodgers scored four times in the fifth, then added two runs in the 12th with Ellis (two hits) chipping in with an RBI, and Uribe (two hits) scoring a run.

A full-scale brawl broke out in Tuesday’s 5-3 win by the Dodgers as Federowicz lined a three-run double in the eighth.

Six players were ejected including pitcher Zack Greinke and Arizona hurler Ian Kennedy, who was suspended 10 games.

It began when Kennedy plunked Puig in the sixth. Greinke then nailed Montero in the seventh and Kennedy drilled Greinke in the home half of the frame which started the melee.

Arizona edged the Dodgers 5-4 on Monday as Willie Bloomquist (two hits) had two RBIs.
