An early deficit was more than the Crescenta Valley High girls’ basketball team could overcome against Chaminade, as the Eagles soared to a 63-49 victory in a second-round game of the West Coast Holiday Festival in Burbank last Friday.
Chaminade scored the first 13 points and held the Falcons scoreless for nearly six minutes of the opening quarter and advanced to the quarterfinals.
The Falcons (8-3), who entered with a four-game winning streak, eventually established their footing, but couldn’t rally after trailing by more than 10 points for much of the match.
The Eagles (10-1) are ranked No. 7 in the state and 19th nationally by the website MaxPreps, used a full-court press and allowed Josie Brock 13 points and Ella Stepanian 10 points.
Village Christian edged Holy Family, 41-36, in a pool-play encounter of the Grant Tournament on Friday even though Melissa Chan and Charisse Talaro each dropped in eight points for the Gaels (1-8).
The Highland boys’ front court is tall and was able to get its guards perimeter shots, dunks and layups as it waltzed to a 58-43 decision over Crescenta Valley in the Hart Holiday Classic on Thursday.
Highland center Devin Burleson was often double-teamed in the low block which allowed easy hoops by Tommie Groce, who led Highland (8-1) with 19 points.
Falcons’ center Eric Patten was in the middle of a late charge as he tallied eight of his team-best 14 points in the fourth quarter as Crescenta Valley (4-5) came within 45-38 and just under six minutes left.
The Glendale boys’ squad fell short against Santa Maria Righetti (4-4), which finished strong over the final three minutes and pulled away for a 74-65 triumph behind Cameron Walker, who had a game-best 27 points and 15 rebounds in the Hart Holiday Classic on Thursday.
Arthur Terzyan led the Nitros (3-5) with 13 points, followed by Tyler Lousararian and Eric Kirakosian each with 11.
Kyle Leufroy paced St. Francis (8-2) with 17 points, while Evan Crawford poured in 13 and Noah Willerford 12 as the Golden Knights handed Franklin a 70-42 setback in a bracket game of the San Gabriel Valley Classic on Thursday.
