USC’s J.T. Daniels and UCLA’s Dorian Thompson-Robinson are both true freshman quarterbacks.
Both played this past Saturday on the road and each was on the losing side.
The No. 17 Trojans lost to No. 10 Stanford 17-3 while the Bruins were blitzed by No. 6 Oklahoma 49-21.
USC (1-1) had difficulty putting the ball into the end zone as Daniels finished 16 of 34 for 215 yards with two interceptions.
Daniels was picked off with 2:22 left in the game and was again intercepted on the next series.
Late in the opening half, on fourth and two from the Stanford 40, Daniels was sacked and fumbled which led to a Stanford score that made it 14-0.
USC (332 total net yards) scored on a 35-yard field goal from sophomore Chase McGrath with 11:24 left in the third quarter.
The Cardinal (2-0) powered ahead 7-0 when senior running back Bryce Love, the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 2017, found the end zone on a six-yard run with 10:26 left in the first period that ended an 83-yard, eight-play drive.
Love finished with a game-high 136 yards on 22 carries for the Cardinal (342 total yards).
Stanford took control 14-0 on a nine-yard pass from junior quarterback K.J. Costello (16 of 27 for 183 yards) to sophomore tight end Colby Parkinson (16 yards on two receptions) with 34 seconds left in the second period.
Thompson-Robinson had 254 yards through the air and connected on 16 of 26 with no interceptions.
The Bruins (0-2) actually led 7-0 when junior running back Bolu Olorunfunme (team-best 56 yards on 15 carries) scored on a three-yard burst as 8:59 remained in the first frame.
Olorunfunme tacked on a second scoring tally in the fourth quarter from two yards as 11:11 was left that sliced the Oklahoma (2-0) lead to 42-14.
Thompson-Robinson later found freshman wide receiver Michael Ezeike with a nine-yard toss and 3:44 left.
Junior quarterback Kyler Murray, who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics ninth overall in this year’s draft, passed for three scores and ran for two.
Murray had 69 yards on 10 rushes and 306 yards on 19 of 33 passes with one pick for the Sooners (485 total yards).
UCLA (388 total yards) was paced by Olorunfunme’s 56 yards on 15 carries while freshman running back Kazmeir Allen added 42 yards on 10 rushes.
Daniels and Thompson-Robinson had merely average outings. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that they’re both young and very likely to get significantly better.
