‘Any Night’ offers surreal look at sleep

A visceral, surreal combination of mystery, thriller, and hallucination, the Los Angeles premiere of Any Night examines the dichotomy between dreams and nightmares, sleep and wakefulness, as it burrows into the subconscious. The production blends excellent acting and production work into a white-knuckled, suspenseful evening of theatre.

Dancer Anna (Marie Fahlgren) comes looking for an apartment to escape her stalkish ex-boyfriend, and strikes up a friendship with upstairs neighbor Patrick (Zac Thomas). Revealing her problems with sleepwalking, the two battle to overcome it when creepy events start occurring. Is Anna living in a dream or nightmare or both?

Both actors exhibit fine chemistry, timing and movement, building a nice believability into the relationship. The expressive Fahlgren blends confidence with vulnerability, bringing a poised fluidity into her portrayal. Thomas’ intense, physical Patrick walks the fine line between creep and nice guy, showing a nice vocal range with other characters.

Director Elizabeth V. Newman creates an excellent pacing through the elaborate pas de deux choreography, throwing the story continually off-kilter as it filters through Anna’s shattered mind.

Strong production work adds to the sinister goings-on, with a disordered, tangled set suggesting the fragmented world of sleep. Lighting and sound enhance the feelings of otherworldliness and foreboding, with costumes playing into the feelings of duplicity.

A tense, careening rollercoaster from start to finish, the engaging, though adults only, Any Night blends psychological mystery and chilling thriller as it examines love, trust and discretion.
