The fairytale musical Disney’s Aladdin playing at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre has everything that was featured in the blockbuster Disney film, plus much more.
It is an extravagant stage production that brings the beloved characters of Aladdin, Jasmine and the exuberant Genie to life. And it has the great songs from the 1992 film including the Oscar-winning “A Whole New World” with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Tim Rice. Live on stage, Aladdin’s journey whizzes audiences into an exotic world of daring adventure, classic comedy and timeless romance. And it offers extra songs written especially for the stage production.
The Broadway adaptation of Aladdin also features a scene in the Genie’s cave that is the biggest wow in the show with the shimmering set getting as much applause as the over-the-top show-stopping production number “Friend Like Me.” That has actor Michael James Scott dazzling as he plays the high-energy wish-granting Genie who brings down the house every time he walks on stage.
The story is about clever poor boy Aladdin who discovers the Genie in the lamp and uses his wishes to pursue Princess Jasmine. The evil Jafar (the delightfully nasty Jonathan Weir) tries to quash their romance and gain power.
The charismatic star of the show, Adam Jacobs, originated the role of Aladdin on Broadway with a heartfelt quality and emotionally powerful voice. Equal to him is Isabelle McCalla as the sweet and spunky Jasmine who asserts her independence. The entire show is full of fabulous characters, from Sultans to “Street Rats” who step out of the tales from “One Thousand and One Arabian Nights” with gusto.
