Senior Star Power world premiere plays Thurs., Dec. 21 – Sun., Dec. 31 in Canoga Park

Review by Tim Lydeen

I recently had the pleasure of attending Senior Star Power’s world premiere production of We Are America: A Musical Salute to Our Veterans. Founded by “Pink Lady” Jackie Goldberg, Senior Star Power Productions is the only professional senior theatre company on the West Coast, and I have wanted to see one of their productions for a long time. The idea of seeing performers aged 60-90 still singing and dancing on stage has always intrigued me, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Opening with two songs by Bruno Mars, we were treated to music from a variety of genres. From pop to rock and standards to show tunes, there was something for all tastes.

Many of the songs had an international flavor to remind the veterans in attendance of songs from countries they may have visited or been stationed in during their time in service. It was like a trip around the world! And being the most wonderful time of the year, there were also a number of Christmas tunes to put you in the holiday spirit, as well.

Director/choreographer Jack Failla did an incredible job of keeping the pace going with never a dull moment. Considering the show’s 90-minute length (without an intermission!), the amazing performers proved that age really is only a number, because their movement and vocals could rival performers half their age. As advertised, they were all sassy, all sexy and all sizzlin’!

With only a few shows offered during the holidays, I highly recommend that you catch one for an uplifting and inspiring experience with matinees at 2pm Thursdays, December 21 and 28, Saturdays, December 23 and 30 and evenings at 8pm Saturdays, December 23 and 30.

There will also be a special New Year’s Eve party and show on Sunday, December 31 where you can enjoy champagne and hors d’oeuvres with the Pink Lady and cast. The festivities start at 6:30pm, which means you should be out early enough to still ring in the New Year at midnight somewhere else if you so desire.
