Kaz Matamura returns to the stage in the critically acclaimed role.

Kaz Matamura returns to the stage in “Madame Butterfly: The Original Play,” offering a rare opportunity to see the play that inspired Puccini’s opera.
The one-act will be presented with a Japanese classical play, “Fool on a Roof,” translated by Matamura, with both plays directed by Mike Rademaekers, co-owners of the Secret Rose Theatre.
Kaz Matamura, a native of Japan who plays the title role, breaks all the rules; contradicting Puccini’s long suffering heroin. Her Butterfly is filled with a lust for life, living each day with passion and joy while waiting for the return of her lover.
In the past decade, Matamura opened the Secret Rose Theatre and founded Fire Rose Productions, a non-profit corporation. She created a workshop for one-person shows and established Fire Rose Productions’ annual 10-Minute Play Festival that is now in its seventh year. Additionally, Kaz launched Fire Rose’s Youth Ensemble that offers scholarships to children of homeless and low-income families and teaches their very popular Summer Shakespeare for Kids. She is also a Classical Japanese Dance Master, was the recipient of the New Theatre Restaurant Fred B. Vogel Scholarship in 2008, a Woodstock Guild Fellowship, and Women in Theatre’s Red Carpet Award in 2006. As the only Japanese theatre owner in the United States, she recently created the first all-Japanese language performance troupe, “Arigato Kai.”

“Madame Butterfly” runs Thursday through Saturday at 8 PM and Sundays at 2 PM, March 5 through March 22 at the Secret Rose Theatre in the NoHo Arts District. For more information, call 1.877.620.ROSE.
