Like Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland in the Andy Hardy movies, ELATE puts on quite a show in their entertaining musical revue “We’ve Got a Show For You!” Lighthearted yet touching, the multi-generational production celebrates life and connection through song.
The show focuses on songs from more contemporary musicals of the last twenty years, particularly the medleys from “Wicked,” “Hairspray,” and “Mamma Mia,” while closing with a selection of tunes from MGM’s movie musicals.
Director Carol Bratcher does a fine job of organizing disparate songs into a simple storyline celebrating making music. The songs take a positive and optimistic look at life.
Choreographer Vicki Kirk keeps the action flowing in the small space with simple, breezy steps for the huge cast.
The cast seemed to be suffering opening night jitters with some tentative, unsure cues and sty-lings. They gained confidence and dynamism as the evening progressed, hitting their marks more spot-on in the second act. The most moving performances came in the songs “Screw Loose,” “Because I Knew You,” and “I Know Where I’ve Been,” which were very expressive and touching.
Tim Simpson stole the show with his loosely improvised vau-deville-like comedy act. Self-deprecating and charming, he performed impressions, juggling, silly puns, and sight gags that featured gentle humor while the performers changed costumes.
An entertaining, lighthearted evening, “We’ve Got a Show For You!” is wonderful entertainment for the whole family.
