Fantasy wrestles with reality in ‘A DeLUSIONAL Affair’ at Santa Monica Playhouse

Review by John K. Adams

A DeLUSIONAL Affair takes place on the 25th wedding anniversary of Julia and Oliver Foxx. Julia (Rachel Galper) has done her time. Relishing the empty nest, she seeks self-fulfillment and has an advance toward writing a novel. Oliver (Gregg Berger) always successful and always right, balks at Julia’s reviewing of their marriage contract while he negotiates the lucrative sale of his company.

The sputtering celebration spins out with the arrival of the mysterious Gina (Albina Katsman) – nubile and on a mission. Oliver awakens with Gina in his bed. He tries mightily to keep her a secret from Julia. Is Gina even real? Does she seek Oliver for herself or his reconciliation with Julia? Is adding a third party into the marriage bed really the way to a woman’s heart? Does Julia even care?

Playing one against the other while the Foxx’s rehash past affairs, privacy, preferred positions and more, Gina’s ultimate purpose remains elusive. Her tenacious presence becomes pivotal to resolving the Foxx’s marital tension.

According to their webpage, “A DeLUSIONAL Affair will make you question everything you ever thought you knew about love, marriage, fantasy and reality and come away with a new perspective on it all.”

If you need a new perspective, A DeLUSIONAL Affair may offer what you need.
